Megyn Kelly Repeats False Stimulus Claim

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) mentioned, in a report, an abandoned train station that is to receive $10million in stimulus funds. Fox News’ Megyn Kelly repeated that assertion twice on June 23 in an effort to show wasteful spending of stimulus funds.

KELLY: Well, the president promised to, quote, “call out any wasteful spending” he sees under his $787 billion stimulus plan. Now we learn that nearly 10 million bucks has gone to renovate an abandoned train station that no one uses

KELLY: — they wanted to repave a backup runway — they’re calling this the airport for nobody; 3.4 million for a wildlife eco-passage in Florida that takes the animals safely under a busy highway; $10 million to renovate an abandoned train station that hasn’t been used in 30 years, Stu.

Unfortunately for both, it’s not really true. While the station house is closed, the platform is not. The station’s platform currently serves more than 80,000 passengers per year, up nearly twice as much as it did five years ago.

Jesse Watters Finally Ambushed… Sorta

John Cook from Gawker.com finally met up with Jesse Watters, a producer for The O’Reilly Factor,  outside of his Huntington, NY house on Saturday morning. Unfortunately, they didn’t get an interview as they avoided confrontation and allowed Watters to leave, without incident, or a word spoken.

After two months of tracking and waiting for such an opportunity, the result is a disappointment, but the nonconfrontational nature of the “ambush” goes further in showing how much of a coward Watters is. If he can dish it out, he should be able to take it. But alas, he wasn’t even asked to take it. He was given courtesy, but he had none to give in return.

Are any of us really surprised?

Sean Hannity Lies About Clinton Op-Ed

Before George W. Bush took office, according to Sean Hannity, Bill Clinton wrote an Op-Ed criticizing the then incoming president. Unfortunately for Hannity, that’s rubbish. Clinton did write an Op-Ed on January 14th, but the only time he mentioned Bush was to suggest a nonpartisan commission on electoral reform.

In the Op-Ed, Clinton wrote about racial profiling, federal sentencing policies, voting rights, electoral reform and proposed Election Day as a national holiday. Where exactly is the negativity toward Bush? Apparently, just in Hannity’s imagination.

HANNITY: I went back — Bill Clinton, before George Bush ever became president, had an op-ed in January 15th, before George Bush was sworn in, criticizing George Bush. You know, for all this talk, “Oh, George Bush needs to be quiet” — now he defended enhanced interrogations. He said it was lawful. He did it to protect this country. He said he wasn’t going to sell out this country for short-term political gain. That –

Former Fox News Columnist Sues Over Wrongful Termination

You may recall that Roger Friedman, an entertainment columnist for Fox News, was supposedly fired for reviewing a pirated copy of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Friedman claims that it was an excuse and cover story for the real reason, which was to bow down to pressure from the Church of Scientology (COS).

Apparently, Friedman was critical of Scientology and had a run in with John Travolta’s wife, Kelly Preston, in which she called him a “religious bigot.” It is also claimed that Preston contacted Fox News Chief, Roger Ailes, and former Vice President, John Moody, via phone and met with them in person to discuss Friedman’s firing with the COS.

The background around the pirated version of the X-Men movie is also suspicious. Supposedly Rupert Murdoch, himself, requested a DVD copy of the movie and that is where the leak may have occurred.

Glenn Beck Makes Unsubstantiated Claims About Keith Olbermann

It’s easy to find direct quotes of Bill O’Reilly’s violent rhetoric. It’s not so easy for Glenn Beck to make similar claims about Keith Olbermann or Frank Rich. Beck has been trying to refocus the negative attention from Fox News somewhere else and fails miserably.

BECK: Keith Olbermann has railed against recruiters. Keith Olbermann has railed against the baby killers that our U.S. soldiers are.

So far, nobody can provide evidence that neither Olbermann, nor Rich, have made offensive comments about U.S. soldiers, or recruiters, similar to those said by Bill O’Reilly about Dr. George Tiller.

Fox News Hypocrisy About White House Access

Do you recall someone named Bret Baier, who worked for a cable news channel called Fox News and had “unprecedented access” to the Bush White House in 2008? Apparently, Fox News doesn’t. Nor do they seem to remember that Baier also went aboard Air Force One and visited Bush’s ranch in Texas.

Conveniently, Sean Hannity doesn’t recall any of that when he and Karl Rove complained about ABC being granted access for the upcoming special, “Questions for the President: Prescription for America.”

HANNITY: Karl, it seems rather unprecedented. You were there in the White House for the better part of eight years. Did this ever happened while George W. Bush was president?

ROVE: You know, look, it’s normal for the networks to want to come in and do an interview inside the White House or to get a glimpse behind the curtain as to what goes on there. This is an unprecedented access to the White House and more importantly an unprecedented use of the White House. I can’t remember a time when the network came in and was going to devote a significant block of time to covering an issue that was on the president’s agenda.

Cyclist Hitting Fox News Writer Arrested

Remember the story we brought you about the cyclist, Brian Dooda, in New York City who was hit by a road raged Fox News writer, and then dragged for 200 yards?

The driver of the Fox News SUV, Don Broderick, was arrested on June 12 by the NYPD for fleeing the scene of the accident that involved an injury. The charge is a misdemeanor that may be punishable with up to one year in jail. Broderick was not jailed, but received a desk appearance ticket, so he’s free until his arraignment.

Roger Ebert on Bill O’Reilly’s Schoolyard Bully Behavior

Renowned film critic Robert Ebert, who has previously mocked Bill O’Reilly, addresses O’Reilly’s behavior, which, Ebert says, is like a “schoolyard bully.”

EBERT: When his guests disagree with him, he shouts at them, calls them liars, talks over them, and behaves like a schoolyard bully… I am more concerned about the danger he and others like him represent to a civil and peaceful society. He sets a harmful example of acceptable public behavior.

Ebert provides numerous examples and cites the Indiana University study that showed O’Reilly’s use of propaganda. He even compares O’Reilly to talk show host Jerry Springer, who is, at least, honest about “selling his soul” for higher ratings.

Perhaps the most important conclusion that Ebert addresses is that Bill O’Reilly is preaching to the choir, yet needlessly and dangerously raising the bar by shouting, using anger to express opinions, and having the general effect of communicating “there’s unfinished business to be done, and its up to them to do it.”

Study: Bill O’Reilly Uses All Seven Elements of Propaganda

Based on a 2007 article from Indiana University School of Journalism:

Starting where the Institute for Propaganda Analysis left off in 1930, Indiana University professors Mike Conway and Maria Elizabeth used a system of coding speech that analyzes the use of propaganda in determining whether or not Bill O’Reilly uses propaganda instead of merely “providing facts,” as he claims.

The following are the seven elements of propaganda previously identified by the IPA:

Bill O’Reilly is guilty of using all seven elements and was found to have called people names 8.88 times per minute. It also showed a pattern of using references to Americans, the U.S. Military and the Bush Administration as victims.

Conway stated that the point of the study was to get past the partisan labeling, but he has still been branded as a liberal based on the results of the study.

A related study, according to Conway, shows that only 11% of surveyed journalists think of Bill O’Reilly as “very close” or “somewhat close” to a journalist.

President Obama Slams Fox News for Attacks

“I’ve got one television station that is entirely devoted to attacking my administration…That’s a pretty big megaphone. You’d be hard pressed if you watched the entire day to find a positive story about me on that front,” Obama said.

A Different Approach to Fighting Fox News

A new site, StopFox.com, takes a different approach to fighting Fox News. The site was created to send a message to Rupert Murdoch and Fox News that people will focus energy (and money) toward so-called enemies of Fox News. Used in conjunction with a boycott of Fox News, their sponsors and supporters, this could have a decent impact. At the very least, it will get some attention.

How will one site do this? Donations are accepted and will be divided among several nonprofit organizations, including Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, the Democratic Party, MoveOn.org and Media Matters for America. One sixth of the money will go back into maintaining the web site. Additionally, letters will be sent to Murdoch as well as Fox News personalities Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck.

While the site is brand new, much is in the works – Plans are being made to share records, receipts and copies of letters sent. StopFox.com currently accepts payments via PayPal, but credit/debit card payments may be possible in the future.
