The McBoycott

mcboycott_200x200Why boycott McDonalds, beside the simple fact that their food is largely regarded as being unhealthy? McDonalds restaurants, in some areas including Missouri and Kansas (UPDATE: similar report from Florida), have agreed to place large TVs in their restaurants with the proviso that they broadcast Fox News and only Fox News. One manager explained that it’s corporate policy. A Regional Director for McDonald’s stated that TVs were being placed in all McDonald’s in a five state region. Danya Proud, spokesperson for McDonald’s USA, denied that it is corporate policy, but that it may be a regional or franchise policy.

While the aforementioned sources are from 2008, and FoxNation.com has bashed McDonalds for their “black” web site last year, similar complaints still come in via email. One person reported nice 50″ plasma TVs in at least five McDonald’s franchises, with different owners. The writer was told that they “have to keep it on” and that FNC is the only channel listed in the menu, or in a channel search.

One solution: TV-B-Gone

Bret Baier Interrupts President Obama 16 Times!

There’s no doubt that President Obama didn’t expect soft ball questions yesterday when he went on Fox News Channel’s’ Special Report to be interviewed about health care reform by Bret Baier, but the lack of respect displayed by the Fox News personality was astounding!

As Obama pointed out, Baier repeated interrupted him while trying to answer the host’s questions. Not once, not five, ten, or a dozen times. 16 Times! Incredibly, Baier said that Obama was dodging his questions, to which Obama responded, “Well, I’m trying to answer your questions and you keep on interrupting.”

Bill O’Reilly, Fox & Friends Survey Falsehoods

Fox News personalities are on the forefront of spreading misinformation about health care reform and here’s one example that takes the cake.

Bill O’Reilly, citing the New England Journal of Medicine stated that  “46.3% May Leave Medical Profession” and “If half of the nation’s doctors are considering bailing on the profession if Obama-care passes, that is a frightening consequence.”

Here’s what the “poll” actually stated:

46.3%of primary care physicians (family medicine and internal medicine) feel that the passing of health reform will either force them out of medicine or make them want to leave medicine.

Misleading, yes, but that’s not the most interesting part. The New England Journal of Medicine states that they never produced a health care survey!

For example, on Fox & Friends, co-host Brian Kilmeade said: “The New England Journal of Medicine has published a report and did a survey, and they said the impact of reform on primary care physicians, 46 percent, they say, feel reform will force them out or make them want to leave medicine.”

This is false.

Media Matters for America contacted the New England Journal of Medicine, which confirmed it neither conducted nor published the “survey.”

NEJM spokesperson Jennifer Zeis told Media Matters that the study had “nothing to do with the New England Journal of Medicine’s original research.” She also made clear that the study “was not published by the New England Journal of Medicine,” and said that “we are taking steps to clarify the source of the survey.”

The “report” that right-wing media are citing actually appeared in Recruiting Physicians Today, which is an employment newsletter produced by “the publishers of the New England Journal of Medicine.” According to Zeis, that report actually “was written by the Medicus Firm,” the medical recruitment firm that conducted the “survey.”

UPDATE: Following inquiries from Media Matters, the “NEJM CareerCenter” website has now posted the following statement, making clear that Recruiting Physicians Today is a “free advertiser newsletter” whose content is “produced by physician recruiting firms and other independent groups involved in physician employment” and that Medicus was responsible for conducting and publishing the “survey” in question…

Christians Urged to Boycott of Glenn Beck

Since Glenn Beck began attacking churches that promote “social justice,” calling it “code language for Marxism,” Christians have been urged to boycott Glenn Beck. Last week Beck went so far as to call on Christians to leave their churches if they hear any preaching about social or economic justice, citing affiliations with Nazism and Communism.

Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church Pastor Ronald Garner put up the following sign in response to Beck’s statements.

GARNER: Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church is a very progressive church. We’re open and affirming in our denomination, which means we accept into the full life of our church gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. We are a peace church, and so I just felt that it was a sign that should be in front of our building to say that Mr. Beck’s comments about the social justice being a perversion of the gospel was a total distortion of anybody that’s even given a cursory reading to the words of Jesus. [...]

I feel it was an unwarranted attack on Christians, and I felt like something needed to be said.

Rev. Jim Wallis, an evangelical leader in Washington. D.C., called on Christians to leave Glenn Beck. Wallis stated, “What he has said attacks the very heart of our Christian faith, and Christians should no longer watch his show… His show should now be in the same category as Howard Stern.”

Mr. Beck, in vilifying churches that promote “social justice,” managed to insult just about every mainline Protestant, Roman Catholic, African American, Hispanic and Asian congregation in the country – not to mention plenty of evangelical ones.

Even Mormon scholars in Mr. Beck’s own church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said in interviews that Mr. Beck seems ignorant of just how central social justice teaching is to Mormonism.

Garner stated that, so far, he has only received positive responses to the sign above.

Bill O’Reilly’s Heath Care / Abortion Falsehood

Bill O’Reilly recently stated on his show that the current health care bill would “require American taxpayers to fund abortion” and “we now have taxpayer money linked up with the termination of a fetus.”

Actually, the Senate Bill, before the House, forbids insurers from using federal subsidies to do so, except in cases of life endangerment, rape, or incest. It specifically states, “the issuer of the plan shall not use any amount attributable” to the subsidies created under the bill “for purposes of paying for such services.” The bill that passed the Senate requires insurers to collect a separate payment for such services so that federal funds are not used as O’Reilly falsely stated.

Sarah Palin Frequent Guest on Opinion Shows

Remember, recently, when Fox News contributor Sarah Palin made comments on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno regarding the “fairness” and “balance” of today’s journalism and her reason for joining Fox News Channel? To refresh your memory, she basically slammed news shows that borrow content from opinion shows, which FNC has plenty of… However, she has been a frequent guest on those types of shows – here’s a short rundown of her appearances since she joined the network:

  • 1/12/2010 – The O’Reilly Factor
  • 1/13/2010 – Glenn Beck
  • 1/14/2010 – Hannity
  • 1/19/2010 – On the Record with Greta Van Susteren
  • 1/20/2010 – The O’Reilly Factor
  • 1/20/2010 – Hannity
  • 1/27/2010 – Hannity

  • 1/28/2010 – On the Record with Greta Van Susteren
  • 2/16/2010 – The O’Reilly Factor
  • 2/25/2010 – Hannity

Really, there’s not much surprise here considering Sarah Palin’s hypocrisy.

Glenn Beck Has Lost More Than 200 Sponsors

According to the Washington Post, more than 200 companies have pulled their ads from Glenn Beck’s show(s), including Apple who, apparently, has pulled all ads from FNC!

More than 200 companies have joined a boycott of Beck’s program, making it difficult for Fox to sell ads. The time has instead been sold to smaller firms offering such products as Kaopectate, Carbonite, 1-800-PetMeds and Goldline International. A handful of advertisers, such as Apple, have abandoned Fox altogether. Network executives say they believe they could charge higher rates if the host were more widely acceptable to advertisers.

There is a legitimate fear for Fox News staffers that Beck is becoming the face of the network. One Fox “journalist” stated that Beck “uses distorted or inflammatory rhetoric that undermines their credibility.”

Roger Ailes: White House May Have Had ‘Legitimate Complaints’ About Fox News

Without providing specifics, Fox News President Roger Ailes may have made an admission of guilt about the bias found on Fox News… at least as far as the claims that came from the White House.

ROBINSON: Do you subscribe to the statement of your news host Chris Wallace that the Obama administration is “the biggest bunch,” he said, “the biggest bunch of crybabies” that he’s dealt with in his 30 years in Washington?

AILES: That was his…

ROBINSON: They’re whining over nothing!

AILES: Well, I don’t think they’re whining over nothing and I think they have — look, there’s legitimate complaints that they could have. And I’ve had this dialogue with David Axelrod, who I like very much and, there are legitimate areas. I mean, Chris said that, that’s his words, that’s what he believes, and he had reason to believe that. But I don’t think its helpful to say that.

Sarah Palin on ‘Fairness’ and ‘Balance’ in MSM

Fox News contributor Sarah Palin was on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, where she had some rather entertaining things to say… And it was not the somewhat intelligent entertainment one would hope for from a Vice Presidential candidate, but rather what you would expect from Palin: a tsunami of BS.

PALIN: I studied journalism, my college degree there in communications. And now I am back there wanting to build some trust back in our media. I think the mainstream media is quite broken and I think there needs to be the fairness, the balance in there — that’s why I joined Fox. Fair and balanced, yes. You know because, Jay, those years a go that I studied journalism it was all about the who, what, when, where, and why, it was not so much the opinion interjected in hard news stories. … As long as there is not the opinion under the guise of hard news stories — I think there needs to be clear differentiation.

Not only does she ignore the fact that Fox News Channel is part of the mainstream media, but she ignores all of the evidence that clearly shows that Fox News’ opinions bleed over to their “news” segments… Unless she was talking about FNC being “quite broken.”
