@Marbran You’re right, how dare he only use one of the 25 synonyms for Win listed in this article alone. But it gets worse then that! The fact that he didn’t say we would “take the prize in Iraq and Afghanistan” proves he’s a fascist communist muslim!

Interpreting words as one sees fit is the entire basis of Law, sir. The interpretations are then used to sway opinion, whether of a jury, a judge, or the public. And I agree with you: wins and victories are successes. The question I have is why Obama would avoid the use of the words ‘win’ and ‘victory.’

Marbran, Again, that’s a petty game of semantics and Fox & Friends doesn’t make any distinctions of their own. It’s easy for you to interpret the words how you see fit, but wins and victories are successes, any way you cut it.

Using the term “successful conclusion” is not the same thing as the terms “win” or “victory.” A successful conclusion occurs anytime one’s gains exceed one’s losses, or more specifically when one feels that the stated goals have been achieved. This is an important distinction, because the stated goals can change over time. When one “wins” or is “victorious” it is clear that the opponent has been vanquished, not merely suppressed. Obama will not make a statement that binds our military actions to any future prospect of a “win” or “victory.”
