Thank you to JoeTheVoter for the following response from McDonald’s, regarding restaurants required to air Fox News Channel on their in-store TVs.

Hello Paul:

Thank you for taking the time to contact McDonald’s. We truly appreciate customer feedback and welcome this opportunity to share some information with you.

As you may not know, approximately 85 percent of McDonald’s restaurants are owned and operated by independent business people. As independent owners, McDonald’s franchise owners have the authority to make certain operating decisions as they relate to their McDonald’s restaurant operations. As such, the decision regarding content shown on televisions in restaurants, is a local restaurant decision and is not mandated by McDonald’s.

Again, thank you for contacting McDonald’s. We hope to have the opportunity to serve you again soon under the Golden Arches.

This does not excuse the fact that McDonald’s is not taking a stand against hate and race baiting by allowing these restaurants to air only FNC propaganda, regardless of customer wishes.

  1. Of course people have a choice. They do not have to eat in a restaurant that is airing FNC if they do not want to do so.

  2. BS answer. As franchisees, these “owners” have to meet certain corporate standards or they will lose their franchise. They must go along with everything corporate tells them. They have to cook the food a certain way, take orders just a certain way, wear their uniforms, buy from their suppliers, etc, so if McDonald’s corporation told them to take the televisions out of their franchises, they would have to do it.

    • For starters you are only partly correct.

When you purchase a franchise you are given certain MUST DO lists but you also are provide the leeway to adjust your individual restaurants to suit your local community.

For instance you must comply with local zoning laws regarding colors, signs etc. you are permitted to display.

You must abide by local health department code regardless of anything McDonald’s says in it’s guidelines on food preparation.

Beyond this individual owners can adjust prices to some extent. This is most often seen in expensive tourist locations. This allows franchises to be financially competitive in their communities.

Locals can choose what promotions to participate in, thus the fine print “subject to franchise participation”.

They are not always required to offer the full approved menu and may offer only a more limited selection provided certain basic items are left such as Big Macs and others.

Structural upgrades such as adding the new “Coffee Shops” are optional because the buildings typically do not belong to McDonald’s and not all franchises have the physical space or can meet the local codes.

While I have not seen a recent copy of a franchise agreement I do not believe television sets are spoken of and don’t see corporate trying to mandate anything regarding the local owner’s right to put up a TV set.

Customers are welcome to complain and should make the point that they will not return as long as there is no choice in stations. The existence of a TV is not the issue…it is the choice of stations. With corporates emphasis on children as consumers those TV’s should be on the cartoon network but allow an adult to request any station that is not objectionable to others in the restaurant at the time!

  3. Please be sure to call/e-mail/write to your local McDonalds (I’m sure there are a few locations near you) and let them know that you have other fast food choices available to you. Encourage others to do the same. In a local market, your voice is even stronger.

    Keys to success:

    - be polite and professional, yet unwavering in your conviction. Angry rants just give them an excuse to ignore you, then make fun of you behind your back. Make them take you seriously.

-Many franchisees own multiple locations. Find out where they’re headquartered.

-Encourage friends and family to do the same.

-Give some specific examples of what you find offensive. EG: “among other things, FOX has joked about putting sodium cyanide in Nancy Pelosi’s chocolate pudding. McDonalds has always marketed itself as family-friendly”, etc-

    keep the pressure on!

That’s not the point, Terry. People have the choice not to listen to propaganga, wherever they are, simply by going outside.
    The point is this:

Yesterday, I was at the Four Points Sheraton in Chambersburg, PA, and on the wall was a television set tuned to FOX News.

The manager told me to feel free to change the channel, but pointed out that the TV was set up to only show news channels.

So, I tried to tune in MSNBC, but no dice.
    Same thing with CNN.

The TV only received ONE channel – FOX.

Same thing with the TVs in ALL of the McDonald’s restaurants here in the south central part of PA – and the MickyD’s management says that FOX is the ONLY station they are allowed to show, as per orders from company headquarters (who denied that this was the case when I wrote to them last July.)

So, who exactly is paying all these hotels and restaurants to show only ONE point of view in their dining rooms and lobbies?

The funny thing is (and I’m giving away my age here) that back during the Cold War, we were taught in school that one major feature of COMMUNISM was that in Communist countries, they had only one or two TV stations, which broadcast the party line. We were taught that this was a BAD thing.

Of course, this is America, and we’re not communist, so the government doesn’t tell hotels and restaurants what channel they have to air in their public spaces. Instead, multi-billion dollar corporate concerns use cash to “persuade” companies to promote a particular party line. In other words, Communism used a “stick” – the threat of force – whereas the New Right uses a “carrot”- cold hard cash.

But the end result is the same – in either case,”They” choose which points of view and which information the American public is exposed to in hotel lobbies, dining rooms and other public places…
…and as far as I’m concerned, that’s STILL a Bad Thing.

The Blimpie in my hometown is operated by a middle eastern couple. I don’t know if they are Pakistani, Indian, Kuwaiti, Muslim, or Hindu. Doesn’t matter. What are the chances that a middle eastern couple would show only Fox News in thier lobby, knowing the rhetoric Fox puts forth about middle easterners, and Muslims in general?

Malcolm from McDonald’s is either misinformed or not in touch with their own policies. All but a very small handful of McDonald’s in the Omaha area company owned. The original franchise owner for the Omaha area retried and sold the stores back to the McDonald’s some years ago. Can you guess which stores play Fox? The company owned stores. The only locations that do not play Fox News are the independent stores. I asked more than one store manager about why they show Fox News. The answer is always the same – the corporate office says they have to show Fox News. In fact, at most locations the corporate office specifically arranges to have the monitors installed so that can show Fox News.

  6. A local decision? Then why was Fox News the channel tuned to store TVs in four different McDonald’s restaurants in three states (Michigan, Indiana, Illinois) I visited this past weekend? With the number of channels available, the odds are against that, methinks.

I never noticed the ‘pattern’ until recently – that all of the McDonalds had only Faux “News”

I confirm that all 6 of my local McDonalds here in Central/SW Virginia have the TV’s with only one channel option – Faux
    “News”…

I actually went to the TV’s and tried changing channels and even asked various managers… they said they were setup to only receive the one station…

    Will no longer patronize McDonalds…

  8. Since I read this article back in August, I’ve made a point of stopping by as many McDonald’s restaurants as I could- Not all of them have TV sets, but of the ones that do, 100% of them are tuned to fox. This includes company owned and franchised stores.
This would be offensive to me even if they were playing a station that I agreed with. How much more offensive that they’re playing demonstrably false propaganda. I have gone into literally dozens of stores in the metro Detroit area with the express purpose of checking the television station. Every single one playing fox. As Biff pointed out, what are the odds?

  9. Yves Godard says:

You deserve a break today, so get up and get away from McDonald’s. I had a similar experience at a Macy’s,
by the way, with a TV set to FNC.

While it’s true that no one is forced at gunpoint to
eat at McDonald’s, it’s also true that by putting all
these sets on FOX ‘News’ only, McDonald’s Corporation
in effect gets one-sided propaganda to wash over a
    large, basically captive audience.

  10. Well, its a part of customer service of every franchisee to choose those stuffs for their place. It would be really hard for a franchisor to control that situation because their main responsibility is related to the business itself.

  11. McDonald’s has a stock reply to complaints about FOX on their TVs:

  12. Just an FYI…while I don’t frequent a lot of McDonnald’s I have not yet been in one that has a TV let alone one set to FuxNews.

    I live in NE Florida.

My home town McDee’s has no television. It is locally owned.
I would surely have something to say if they put in a TV and only allowed FOX to show.

  13. unfortunately this is how a franchise business works. They don’t have control over every aspects of the businesses operation as it would be unenforcable. Therefore, you should complain as suggested to your local store.

I just visited a mcdonalds while on a trip and the TV was set to fox newsless and couldn’t be changed. THAT IS DIGUSTING! dumbing down middle America. I will not be giving McDonalds another cent!

  15. It is not just franchise units. This one, in Grand Rapids MI, is a corporate owned store which has same “Fox Only” policy:

    415 28th Street Southeast
    Grand Rapids, MI

  16. Definitely, everyone of us has the right to decide which restaurant are we going to spend our money to avail their goods and services…
