  1. So…Costco should reject ads for books by people that you disagree with? Do you also think they shouldn’t sell such books?

I hate Beck and everything he stands for, but this sounds like old-fashioned censorship, which to me is far worse than anything Beck might have to say.

  2. FoxNewsBoycott says:

bigyaz, Costco is completely within their rights to sell Beck’s book and we are within our rights to tell Costco what we think of them selling the book. And, as free market consumers, we can take our business elsewhere. That is, in no way, censorship by an outside party. It’s not mandated. Costco can choose to do what is in their best interest, which may not include catering to anti-government bigots.

  3. Wow. Booksellers deciding which books I can buy and which I can’t based on ideology. That’s scary.

  4. FoxNewsBoycott says:

bigyaz, How about Walmart refusing to even stock certain books and CDs based on ideology? How about the church-goers burning books and telling their congregations who they should vote for? How about a so-called “news” channel promoting anti-government protests? Hmmm…

  5. Bob Justice says:

Costco probably already avoids advertising some books that might be considered way too controversial and not worth the risk. I suspect that they wouldn’t be promoting John Perkins’ books, for instance. Might ruffle too many feathers.
So, letting them know that advertising the far right hypocritical crap is liable to ruffle some feathers also, and alienate a significant part of their customer base, is how it’s supposed to be.
Funny, it’s a-ok when the “right” does it. But I guess that’s hypocrisy for ya.

  6. Believe me, I’m as far left as any of you. I just think there is a difference between buying ads on a TV show — which clearly indicates some type of endorsement — and selling books that cover a wide spectrum of ideas, even those we virulently abhor.

Bob Justice: Just because the “right” uses vile, abhorrent tactics doesn’t mean we on the left should do the same.

  7. FoxNewsBoycott says:

bigyaz, Assuming Costco was paid for the ad placement, shouldn’t they be concerned where that money came from and who profits from the book’s sales? It looks like endorsement to me… It was their choice to accept the deal. In any event, “if you lie down with dogs you get up with fleas.”

  8. Costco Boycott says:

So I suppose the AL Gore on the front page is an OK response to a PAID Beck advert, right fnb?

  9. Costco Boycott says:

    Mr. Fuller,

Based on your comments printed from the editor’s desk in the Costco Connection this month, it is obvious to me that you have recently experienced the famous “tolerance” of the ideological left. However, your placement of Al Gore on this month’s cover reeks of your cow-towing to these intolerants. In the future, if you wish to retain myself as a member you will refrain from providing free editorial space to polarizing figures like Mr. Gore in order to placate these zealots. Which leads me to my next point.

Your transparent attempt to equate a paid advertisement by Mr. Beck with the free editorial space you have granted to Mr. Gore while invoking the U.S. Constitution is perhaps the most feeble rhetorical trick I have encountered in a long while. I am no fan of Mr. Beck, but your highlighting of Mr. Gore’s “accomplishments” betray obvious political leanings and have no place in warehouse club publication.

I am willing to look past this rather obvious error in judgment (the Gore cover and your comments), but I will not hesitate to drop my membership if you continue use the Costco Connection as a pulpit to further your own or your editorial staff’s personal political beliefs.

As difficult as it may be for you and your staff, try to play it down the middle. Refrain from highlighting the likes of Gore (and Beck) on your cover. Let Mr. Gore pay for his space, just like Mr. Beck’s publisher has done

  10. FoxNewsBoycott says:

Please provide an example of Al Gore calling any President a racist, joking about poisoning any Speaker of the House, or voicing his desire to bash people over the head with a shovel… You have every right to contact Costco as you see fit, and I’m not a huge Al Gore fan, but I think comparing a self-proclaimed “dirtbag” who preaches violence and hate to someone who wants to help the environment, even if his efforts may be misguided, is ridiculous.

  11. Ben Jenkins says:

FOX NEWS BOYCOTT!!!! Wake up…I don’t know if you saw the latest Costco Connection, but where as Glenn Beck got a 1 page ad for his book in efforts for Costco to make more money, Compare that to the shameless 3 page article from Al Gore in the November 2009 Costco Connection (where the promotion of his book is only an after thought). Ad that to the shameless weak justification made by the Editor of Costco Connection (David Fuller) at the front of that magazine.

It is the business of Costco to sell books…it is not the business of costco to sell ideology.

Book promotions = OK Ideology promotions = NOT OK.

p.s. you said, “I’m not a huge Al Gore fan, but I think comparing a self-proclaimed “dirtbag” who preaches violence and hate to someone who wants to help the environment, even if his efforts may be misguided, is ridiculous.”

If you think that’s what Glenn Beck is teaching, saying, etc etc, then you are either ignorant, or incapable of processing normal information. I challenge you to find anywhere when Glenn beck has encouraged anyone to act violently to Al Gore.

  12. Truindependent says:

I am a member of Costco. This is not a censorship issue. Costco can sell all the books it wants. But I don’t contribute to their bottom line for them to use my money to promote a hate monger in my membership magazine. And I would feel the same way if their was a full page ad for a book by a liberal hate monger, although I don’t know of any who have sunken as low as Glenn Beck has.

  13. FoxNewsBoycott says:

Ben, It’s hilarious that you say that I am “either ignorant, or incapable of processing normal information” when you are obviously projecting. Beck is well known for his preaching style and violent rhetoric, not that he’s ever talked about poisoning Gore, or bashing Gore over the head with a shovel as he’s said about other politicians. Please try again once you’ve gotten a firmer grasp on the English language.

  14. Ben Jenkins: Read the post again; it says nothing about “poisoning Gore, or bashing Gore over the head with a shovel…” If you don’t get it after re-reading it you’re not worth our time.

Al Gore, love him or hate him, at least stands for something and is trying to accomplish something. Beck is just a negative, hateful rabble-rouser out to boost his ratings at the expense of the nation.

  15. Truindependent says:

Here is my email to Mr. Fuller, the editor of Costco Connection regarding his defense of promoting the Glenn Beck book:

    Mr. Fuller:

It must be nice to have a podium from which you can espouse your views with no equal venue through which dissenting voices can achieve the same public airing. And it’s nice that you have such a low opinion of the members of Costco who, by the way, pay your salary. Your statements in the November 2009 Costco Connection – ‘some of our readers either do not understand’ and ‘it saddens’ you almost brought tears to my eyes. But those tears were brought about when I realized what an elitist snob you must truly be. Or maybe some of your readers do not understand or are saddened by your apparent superiority to the rest of us.

The issue with Glenn Beck is not about censorship – you can sell all the books you want. But when you print a full page ad promoting a book by someone who has said:

‘This president I think has exposed himself over and over again as a guy who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture….I’m not saying he doesn’t like white people, I’m saying he has a problem. This guy is, I believe, a racist.’

‘I’m thinking about killing Michael Moore, and I’m wondering if I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it. … No, I think I could. I think he could be looking me in the eye, you know, and I could just be choking the life out. Is this wrong?’

‘When I see a 9/11 victim family on television, or whatever, I’m just like, ‘Oh shut up’ I’m so sick of them because they’re always complaining.’

‘The only [Katrina victims] we’re seeing on television are the scumbags.’

You are promoting someone who is a true hate-monger and that is not what I expect my Costco dues to be used to promote. You want to stick his books among all the other books you sell? Fine. But don’t use a full page ad in MY magazine to promote the views of such a despicable individual.

And I’m wondering, can you provide me examples of full page ads which have run in Costco Connection regarding books by authors who had such hatred toward George W. Bush? Or is it just Democratic presidents with whom you are comfortable promoting books by someone who accuses the president of being racist?

If you would like to express your displeasure regarding the full page ad in Costco Connection promoting Glenn Beck’s book, here is the email address for the editor:

    DFuller@Costco.com

    The publisher is at:

    GRoeglin@Costco.com

  16. FNB You are totally ignorant scum sucking mad men. Costco has every right to advertise a book, what they don’t have the right to do is promote an ideology like they did with Al Gore. Fox news is the ONLY fair and balanced station on the air. You just can’t stand it because it reveals the lunacy of the left which you are obviously part of.

  17. FoxNewsBoycott says:

Biteme, if that is your real name… You don’t seem to realize that this site has nothing to do with Al Gore, so Costco isn’t going to be called out for promoting that “ideology.” Costco did accept money to promote a book written by a hateful, sexist and race baiting idiot who works for Fox News. I challenge you to provide examples of Gore using violent rhetoric similar to Beck’s. You also claim that FNC is “fair and balanced” yet claim that they reveal the “lunacy of the left” – you can’t have it both ways. Either they’re “fair and balanced,” or they’re not. Hint: They’re not.
BTW, Costco has the right to advertise a book, just as they have a right to promote an ideology – where in the 1st amendment are warehouse club stores denied that right? The question is whether it’s in their best interest, or in the best interest of their members.

  18. The truth is, until the people at the top of Costco realise and understand what Beck’s all about, they will promote his stuff. You can’t expect anything different – and they may have the same values that he does. Sometimes people just need it pointed out to them.
