Last night the Mount Vernon city council voted unanimously to distance themselves from Mayor Bud Norris and this weekend’s event honoring Glenn Beck. “This man has done nothing for the City of Mount Vernon and its citizens,” said Rhonda McDonald, of Mount Vernon. “If you want to give a key to the city, give the key to the chief of police.”
On Wednesday night, the City Council of this town of 32,000 distanced itself from Mayor Bud Norris, who plans to give the keys to the city to talk-show personality Glenn Beck on Saturday.
The seven-member council unanimously passed a resolution proposed by member Dale Ragan that stated, “Mount Vernon City Council is in no way sponsoring the Mayor’s event on September 26, 2009 and is not connected to the Glenn Beck event in any manner.”
The resolution came after two dozen people who had signed up for the public-comment part of the session spoke in often emotional language to oppose honoring the controversial talk-show host.
Shirts reading, “HATE IS NOT A MOUNT VERNON VALUE” are being sold by a local retired teacher.

Well, I wrote the mayor and council members and said I would never consider visiting their town if they gave Glenn Beck key to city. To honor someone who has spread so much hatred and division is a marvel in stupidity. Many of the locals are obviously not too pleased, either.
Funny the libs Left labels Beck a hate monger. I can list a hundreds of dems who falsely accused Republicans of Racism, who spew hate all day long, Jesse Jackson, most of the African Americans in congress have at least one speach more hateful towards whites or Republicans than ever has come out of Beck’s mouth. I was just courious about this whole thing but after some of the comments around the web, I am going to drive my harley from Gig Harbor to Mt. Vernon just to show I’m tired of being accused of Racism by Dems as a threat to stop complaining about this out of control congress and President. Thank you dems you got me fired up!
Chris, You realize that not all “libs” accuse Republicans of racism, nor do they accuse all Republicans of racism, right? Can you accept the fact that some of the people at the protests had racist, or race baiting, signs? Do you denounce those people? That is the main problem – There are, obviously, racists, but nobody they stood side by side with will come forward and say that those people are racists, or that racism is bad. Plus, by Beck’s own standards that he’s used toward Jesse Jackson, he is a racist. Why is it wrong for Jesse Jackson to state that Obama acts “white,” but it’s okay for Beck to say the same thing?
