Coalition Takes Action With StopTheWitchHunt.org

The following was released today by StopTheWitchHunt.org:

This Halloween, take action against the lies and hate speech that Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Lou Dobbs, Paul Brown, and Pat Buchanan have been spewing in a nationwide witch hunt.

Echo Justice, a coalition of national and local organizations launched a multi-media counter to the right-wing’s echo chamber. StopTheWitchHunt.org is a newly formed multimedia watch dog portal that will use social media and mobile communications to take a grassroots stand and “call out” the mischaracterizations and hate speech that has been going on for too long.

“History has taught that bad things happen when good people are silent,” says Makani Themba- Nixon, Executive Director of The Praxis Project and a member of the Echo Justice coalition. “StoptheWitchHunt.org allows us to confront these scare tactics and make our voices heard.”

The website is designed to give voice to the millions of Americans who believe it is time for talk-show hosts and elected officials to stop stoking the racial anxieties of the fringes of America.

Beck and his fellow band of hooligans have been telling scary stories about President Obama whom Limbaugh has disrespectfully referred to as “the little black man child.” Beck recently accused the biracial President of having “a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture.” And he has attacked a number of key Administration officials accusing them of being socialist and anti-American. Limbaugh, who has a history of making racially charged remarks about Obama, has called the mixed-race president “a halfrican American.” Days before the President’s inauguration in January, Limbaugh said, “I hope he fails” - the verbal equivalent of putting a razor blade in a candy apple.

StoptheWitchHunt.org is just the beginning of a multi-media campaign to support a new resistance to these Halloween Goons. Visit stopthewitchhunt.org or text WITCHHUNT to 228466 to build public support for a more responsible journalism.

Fox News’ Chris Wallace Parrots Glenn Beck

For all those who like to respond to criticism of Fox News Channel commentators such as Glenn Beck, with the idea that there are, essentially, two Fox Newses – the “news” and the “opinion” shows – Media Matters for America has put together the following list. It shows the numerous times Fox News host Chris Wallace (a news guy) parrots Glenn Beck (a commentator).

  • Wallace echoes Beck in airing Untouchables clip, referring to the Obama administration’s “Chicago way.”
  • Wallace followed Beck’s lead in mainstreaming O’Keefe’s ACORN videos.
  • Wallace and Beck repeat bogus claim that U.S. Chamber of Commerce “represents 3 million businesses.”
  • Wallace’s “death book” smears followed Beck’s “death panels” smears.
  • Wallace echoed Beck in asking if prosecution of Bush admin. will lead U.S. toward “what we’ve had in banana republics?”
  • Beck and Wallace have both advanced the meme of Obama as an “apologist.”
  • Beck and Wallace use fictional character “Jack Bauer” in defense of torture.

Keep in mind, that was one host and one commentator.

Glenn Beck’s Agent is Liberal Operative Matt Hiltzik

Glenn Beck and his agent, Matthew Hiltzik, seem put ideological differences aside for the money…

Hiltzik is a Democratic PR operative that works for Beck, but also worked on Hillary Clinton’s 2000 Senate campaign, Eliot Spitzer’s 1998 attorney general campaign, and for studio head Harvey Weinstein. He also represents Katie Couric, Alec Baldwin, Annie Leibovitz and Don Imus. Matthew’s father, George Hiltzik, brokered the radio gigs of blogger Matt Drudge and Fox News host Bill O’Reilly.

The close friendship and lucrative business relationship that has developed between the 45-year-old conservative firebrand and the 37-year-old former Democratic operative shows how partisan media personalities get discovered, promoted and catapulted into the political stratosphere, even when the talent and the talent broker have opposing ideologies. But for Hiltzik’s former Democratic allies, the alliance is still mostly shocking.

It was also interesting that Matt Hiltzik considers “Democratic activist and public relations powerbroker” Ken Sunshine a mentor. Sunshine advises Color of Change and Green for All, two groups founded by Van Jones, who was repeatedly attacked by Beck.

And it’s not just Sunshine’s clients who are subject to Beck’s drubbings, it’s also his onetime mentor. The current secretary of state, for example, did not respond to calls about Hiltzik and his top client’s tirades against the Obama administration. Asked if he thought Hillary Clinton approved of his current promotion of Beck, who has called her, among other things, “the antichrist,” Hiltzik said, “She has a lot more important things to worry about.”

“Matt Hiltzik is a top professional who can’t save Glenn Beck from his vulgar, hateful ignorance,” said Robert Zimmerman, a public relations executive in New York, Democratic National Committee member and close friend of Hiltzik’s. “But he can get him extensive publicity while he goes down in flames.”

Glenn Beck’s Uses Baseball Bat in Violent Rhetoric

Once again, needlessly bringing violence into a non-violent issue, Glenn Beck brandishes a baseball bat and states, “Anyone not on board, look out, because you too could be the next victim of the killing spree.” You’d be hard pressed to find anybody in the White House, or in any other main stream media outlet, that repeatedly uses such violent rhetoric while discussing, well… anything. Of course, he’s just “acting” like a violent person, so perhaps Beck is more akin to Carrot Top, using props in his comedy show.

Shepard Smith Apologizes For ‘Lack of Balance’

Shepard Smith apologized to viewers of Studio B for “lack of balance.” Fox News correspondent Shannon Bream surprised Smith with an impromptu interview with GOP candidate for Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie. Smith replied by asking about an interview with Christie’s Democratic opponent.

SMITH: When will you be interviewing Jon Corzine?

BREAM: We have multiple requests, and when it comes through, we’ll let you know

[...]

SMITH: Wow, I didn’t know that was about to happen. My apologies for the lack of balance there. If I had had control, it wouldn’t have happened.

Incidentally, Smith provided his analysis of the polls showing Christie far behind, but the on-screen graphic read, “NJ GOV CANDIDATES LOCKED IN DEAD HEAT.”

Fox News Falsehood on Feinberg Interview ‘Ban’

Last week Ken Feinberg of the Treasury Department, the so-called “Pay Czar,” held a round-robin interview with several networks. Fox News, playing the victim, complained that it was a White House “ban,” even though the interview was handled by the Treasury Department and not the White House.

On Thursday night, Fox News ran a shocking report that the “Obama administration” had “contacted the White House pool” and made executive pay czar Kenneth Feinberg available for round-robin interviews, “but specified that all members of the pool were welcome except Fox News.” They billed it as the Obama administration’s “first concrete step” in the direction of treating Fox News Channel like it’s not a real news organization.

Mediaite also addressed the idea that all the networks joined together in a show of solidarity to force Fox News to be included, stating that, in actuality, it appears that it was on the basis of their mutual pool arrangement.

Talking Points Memo has provided a somewhat different story, discrediting Fox News’ version of the events. Additionally, a Treasury spokesperson stated, “There was no plot to exclude Fox News, and they had the same interview that their competitors did. Much ado about absolutely nothing.”

Feinberg did a pen and pad with reporters to brief them on cutting executive compensation. TV correspondents, as they do with everything, asked to get the comments on camera. Treasury officials agreed and made a list of the networks who asked (Fox was not among them).

But logistically, all of the cameras could not get set up in time or with ease for the Feinberg interview, so they opted for a round robin where the networks use one pool camera. Treasury called the White House pool crew and gave them the list of the networks who’d asked for the interview.

The network pool crew noticed Fox wasn’t on the list, was told that they hadn’t asked and the crew said they needed to be included. Treasury called the White House and asked top Obama adviser Anita Dunn. Dunn said yes and Fox’s Major Garrett was among the correspondents to interview Feinberg last night.

Simple as that, we’re told, and the networks don’t want to be seen as heroes for Fox.

Experiencing the situation firsthand was FNC’s Major Garrett, who confirmed that a mistake had been made, possibly by both sides, but FNC was not purposefully excluded as initially reported by Fox News.

Garrett finally explained his side of the supposed FNC snub, saying “the Treasury Department did not receive on that day a specific request from Fox to interview Feinberg,” but he has a “standing request from me as senior White House correspondent on Fox to interview any newsmaker at the Treasury at any given time news is being made.”

Keep in mind that over the past year, Major Garrett has been involved with some misquotes and false claims. However, if his account is true, it doesn’t excuse the innaccurate initial reports from Fox News.

FoxNews.com ‘Way’ Incorrect Spelling

In the Politics section on FoxNews.com there was a headline that read, “Security Chiefs Way Risks to Modernized ‘Smart’ Grid Electrical System,” but now correctly reads, “Security Chiefs Weigh Risks to Modernized ‘Smart’ Grid Electrical System” (emphasis added). Glenn Beck Falsehood on Net Neutrality

Glenn Beck, apparently, doesn’t understand Net Neutrality, but attempts to spread fear about it using statements like, “You have a freedom of speech or the government. You can’t really have both.”

Here he is talking with Phil Kerpen, chairman of the Internet Freedom Coalition (an alliance of conservative groups that opposes all taxes and regulations related to the Internet), who has taken credit for providing Beck with past comments made by Van Jones. Now, he’s feeding Beck information about Net Neutrality, but as you watch, or read the transcript, it’s easy to see that Beck has passed more misinformation onto his viewers…

KERPEN: It is a very big week because the FCC on Thursday is going to decide what the future of the Internet looks like, if it looks much like the past 10 years where you have private competition and pretty much people can do what they want on the Internet or whether we have a much, much heavier government hand. And they’re going to take the first step on that Thursday.

BECK: OK. I want to start just real quick – Net neutrality, because it happens on Thursday. This is that everybody should have free Internet, right?

KERPEN: Well, essentially. You know, they dress it up the way they dress up a lot of their things. They turn it upside-down by saying that evil corporations, phone and cable corporations are going to block what we can do block or we can say.

Companies, such as Comcast, are now able to degrade or block service for things such as P2P communications. Net Neutrality is a solution to that problem, not a conspiracy to control the Internet and censor our free speech.

Science Progress defines Net Neutrality as this:

At the most basic level, net neutrality is the principle that Internet users should be in control of what content they view and what applications they use on the Internet; all content on the Internet is equally accessible, and once a person pays for access to the Internet, they alone get to choose how they use it. This means that providers should not be allowed to block access to certain sites or applications, or charge different customers different amounts for services.

Here is the definition on Wikipedia:

A neutral broadband network is one that is free of restrictions on content, sites, or platforms, on the kinds of equipment that may be attached, and on the modes of communication allowed, as well as one where communication is not unreasonably degraded by other communication streams.

The principle states that if a given user pays for a certain level of internet access, and another user pays for a given level of access, that the two users should be able to connect to each other at that given rate of access.
