DailyKos Call To Action – Boycott Fox News

From DailyKos.com: my adventures in foxnews boycotting, a call to action, and how to help by the bipolar bear

Prompted by Glenn Beck‘s guest wishing death and destruction for the United States in some idiotic and sadistic attempt at bettering the country (what??), a diary was posted on DailyKos.com that not only supports the boycott of Fox News, but also provides some great tips and information. You can also check out responses sent by some of the companies on our Fox News Sponsors list.

If on the phone:

1- ask to speak to someone in the advertising department (if you start with customer service, they will either feed you a line, or just transfer you anyway)
2- when they get on the phone, i ask them if they agree with the statement made on glenn beck’s show (which i read verbatim)
3- when they say no, i ask them why they are funding a network that broadcasts hateful and disgusting things like this. Then i let them know that, unless they take action, they are going to face a growing boycott i won’t stop at fanning the flames of.

An important thing to note: MAKE SURE YOU ARE ALWAYS NICE!!
Please try and remember that the people you are talking to are hired to act as middlemen between you and the people actually deserving of your indignity.

If via on site, or standard, email:

I just wanted to let you know that after what was maliciously and horribly stated on Glenn Beck’s Program yesterday (6/30/09), I (and the rest of my family, as well as several friends I have talked to) will not buy ANY of your product/services (or product from any parent companies) until you cease your advertising on fox news.

In case you weren’t aware, this is a direct quote from yesterday:

“The only chance we have as a country right now is for Osama bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States. Because it’s going to take a grassroots, bottom-up pressure, because these politicians prize their office, prize the praise of the media and the Europeans. Only — it’s an absurd situation. Again, only Osama can execute an attack which will force Americans to demand that their government protect them effectively, consistently, and with as much violence as necessary.”

There has been NO rebuke, and no apology from ANYONE at or related to fox news for one of the most horrifying things i have ever heard someone say on TV (especially as a native NYer who lost 2 close friends on 9/11)

Your support of fox news is absolutely unacceptable, and, as such, you will lose out on my business until you make it right. (we all lost people on 9/11, as new yorkers, and we can’t even stomach a company that would pay a network money to advocate murdering american citizens with a weapon of mass destruction for the advancement of political goals)

Have a good day

Sincerely,
<my name>

Fox News Quite Upset About Al Franken Victory

Fox News personalities Glenn Beck and Brian Kilmeade (Fox & Friends) seem to be extremely upset that Al Franken is now a Senator… Of course, Fox News did sue Franken (and lost) about using the term “fair and balanced” in the title of his book… This is just childish ranting:

GLENN BECK: This is like having me in the Senate,” Beck said. “You don’t want me as a Senator! What is that? I mean, it shows how crazy our country has gone — you don’t want me as a Senator, you don’t want Al Franken as a Senator.

BRIAN KILMEADE: Now we find out that Al Franken — who’s barely sane if you read his books, and is quite angry in every facet of his life — is now the Senator from Minnesota

Even the Rupert Murdoch owned Wall Street Journal gets in on the rhetoric:

WALL STREET JOURNAL: Mr. Franken now goes to the Senate having effectively stolen an election… If the GOP hopes to avoid repeats, it should learn from Minnesota that modern elections don’t end when voters cast their ballots. They only end after the lawyers count them.

Glenn Beck Guest Wants America Attacked

Glenn Beck had former CIA official Michael Sheuer on his show, during which they speculated that America would be better off if we were to be attacked by terrorists again…

The only chance we have as a country right now is for Osama bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States…It’s an absurd situation again, only Osama can execute an attack which will force Americans to demand that their government protect them effectively, consistently, and with as much violence as necessary.

That’s the same Michael Sheuer who proclaimed that anyone who did not support America’s use of torture to obtain information is anti-American. Keep in mind that Glenn Beck profits from this sort of fear mongering and it will only strengthen support for the tea parties he’s promoting.

Glenn Beck Tries to Rewrite Alaska’s History

Glenn Beck was on Fox & Friends this morning discussing upcoming tea parties as well as his version of how, why and when the United States acquired Alaska. Here’s what he had to say:

CARLSON: But nowhere in that bill is anything about reducing our dependence on foreign oil.

BECK: None… You know Donald Trump, I want to talk to this guy. When he was on the show just a few minutes ago I was thinking how can you not be laughing at us? How can the world not be laughing at us? We have all these resources. Why did we buy Alaska in the 1950s? We bought Alaska for the resources. And now we say no!

Here’s a little history lesson for Beck: Alaska was purchased from the Russians in 1867 for $7.2million. It became an unofficial territory in 1884, but after the gold rushes at the end of the century, Alaska officially became a U.S. territory in 1912. Statehood was approved in 1958. Oil was discovered in Prudhoe Bay in 1968.

So, while Alaska officially became a state in the late 1950s, it was owned by the U.S. for much longer. Additionally, it was purchased about a hundred years before the oil discovery, so that could hardly have been the reason.

Glenn Beck & Fox News Promoting Tea Parties. Again.

Glenn Beck joined Fox & Friends this morning to promote another round of tea bagging to protest Barack Obama & taxes, which will be held on the 4th of July. Like previous tea parties, these are being organized by the lobbyist-run groups Americans for Prosperity and FreedomWorks, with the help of Fox News, of course. Fox News has even run segments with Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC) to promote the tea parties.

So, why is Glenn Beck suggesting that people spend the 4th of July protesting what’s wrong with America? Last year (while Bush was still in office) he suggested, in an op-ed, that we should celebrate by not talking about our problems, but rather about what’s right with our country. He also suggested that the day be used to take a break from talking about “crooked politicians.” Is that an admission that Bush was a crooked politician, but Obama is not?

Glenn Beck Makes False Claim About Paul Krugman

Glenn Beck, caught making stuff up again, claimed that Paul Krugman missed the $8trillion housing bubble. In fact, Krugman was worried about the bubble as early as 2002. Fortunately for Beck, his audience probably won’t fact check him and assume he’s smarter than a Nobel Prize winner…

GLENN BECK: The unemployment rate is 19.2 percent now, and that’s not the worst place in America. And yet, at least a dozen of the same economic bean heads who missed the industry’s $8 trillion housing bubble — yeah, those guys — including our best bud, the 2008 Nobel Prize winner Paul Krugman — they’re now calling for a third stimulus.

PAUL KRUGMAN (2002): More and more people are using the B-word about the housing market. A recent analysis by Dean Baker, of the Center for Economic Policy Research, makes a particularly compelling case for a housing bubble. House prices have run well ahead of rents, suggesting that people are now buying houses for speculation rather than merely for shelter. And the explanations one hears for those high prices sound more and more like the rationalizations one heard for Nasdaq 5,000.

PAUL KRUGMAN (2005): That’s why it’s so ominous to see signs that America’s housing market, like the stock market at the end of the last decade, is approaching the final, feverish stages of a speculative bubble.

PAUL KRUGMAN (2005): I’ve written before about the reasons to believe that current house prices in much of the country represent a bubble. When that bubble begins to deflate, so will housing-related employment.

Glenn Beck Makes Unsubstantiated Claims About Keith Olbermann

It’s easy to find direct quotes of Bill O’Reilly’s violent rhetoric. It’s not so easy for Glenn Beck to make similar claims about Keith Olbermann or Frank Rich. Beck has been trying to refocus the negative attention from Fox News somewhere else and fails miserably.

BECK: Keith Olbermann has railed against recruiters. Keith Olbermann has railed against the baby killers that our U.S. soldiers are.

So far, nobody can provide evidence that neither Olbermann, nor Rich, have made offensive comments about U.S. soldiers, or recruiters, similar to those said by Bill O’Reilly about Dr. George Tiller.

Boycott Goldline International, Inc.

Glenn Beck invaded my commute via a radio commercial for Goldline International, Inc., one of those gold buying/selling sites offering “investment kits” and whatnot… According to their Corporate Information page, Goldline International, Inc. became the exclusive precious metals sponsor of the Glenn Beck show in 2008. It also appears that they are the exclusive sponsor of Glenn Beck’s comedy show. So, they’ve been added to the list of Fox News sponsors.

Here is their contact information:

A Different Approach to Fighting Fox News

A new site, StopFox.com, takes a different approach to fighting Fox News. The site was created to send a message to Rupert Murdoch and Fox News that people will focus energy (and money) toward so-called enemies of Fox News. Used in conjunction with a boycott of Fox News, their sponsors and supporters, this could have a decent impact. At the very least, it will get some attention.

How will one site do this? Donations are accepted and will be divided among several nonprofit organizations, including Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, the Democratic Party, MoveOn.org and Media Matters for America. One sixth of the money will go back into maintaining the web site. Additionally, letters will be sent to Murdoch as well as Fox News personalities Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck.

While the site is brand new, much is in the works – Plans are being made to share records, receipts and copies of letters sent. StopFox.com currently accepts payments via PayPal, but credit/debit card payments may be possible in the future.

Urge Democrats and Progressives to Stay off Fox News

From the individual choice to stop watching a channel to the organized effort to affect a company’s revenue stream, boycotts come in many shapes and sizes, including the following suggestion from DailyKos.com and NewsCorpse.com. Please contact Democrats and progressive pundits and urge them to not go on the Fox News Channel. Not only is it a wasted effort to discuss issues on Fox News, it can extremely counterproductive.

Guests on Fox News are seemingly chosen for their right leaning political views, or their ability to be dominated. The viewers want to see the debates in which their side always wins. They want their ideals to be reinforced and to have that feeling of power that Fox News provides when they whip a liberal into submission. Don’t give them that pleasure. Don’t give Fox News the ratings they like to taunt like a school-yard bully.

In all likelyhood, Fox News personalities will call them cowards for not wanting to sit down, face to face, with the likes of Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity, or Glenn Beck. The point is, who cares? Show Fox News that they simply don’t matter anymore. They should be irrelevant.

So, every time you see a Democrat or progressive guest on Fox News, contact them and tell them they are obligated to help ensure responsible journalism by avoiding the hate and bile that is Fox News. By appearing on Fox News, they are doing further harm to the efforts to repair the damage inflicted by the Bill O’Reillys, Sean Hannities and Glenn Becks of the world.

Glenn Beck is a Waste of Twitter Space

Glenn Beck fans on Twitter are all euphoric over the fact that he’s really there, twittering his tweets with his tweeple.  So, what does @GlennBeck tweet? Apparently the “tweet” thing pisses him off, we’re all going to die, he likes fish, but doesn’t love it, has buyer’s remorse over furniture and wants to show people his meat…

And you thought that he acted crazy when he was on-topic! This man could be the “before” in a commercial promoting ADD medication…

Glenn Beck Called “Lying Sack of Dog Mess” on The View

I’m not exactly sure why Glenn Beck wanted to go on The View, much less be allowed to go on the View. Aside from Elisabeth Hasselbeck, a staunch conservative, he wasn’t going to get much support. I don’t think anyone would have expected Whoopie Goldberg to call him a “lying sack of dog mess” on national TV. Apparently, it was in response to a story from Glenn Beck about being approached by the women of The View while on a train and being poorly treated.

It didn’t stop there. Barbara Walters went off on him for lack of research, he can’t provide much of a response to a simple question about his convictions, answering simply, “I believe in God. I believe in the founding of this country. I believe George Washington, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson were geniuses.” I guess that sets him apart from, well, not many people, really… except he took a beating from some women named Whoopie and Barbara. Since then, he’s said that Barbara Walters is a liar and that he wants a “damn apology. ”

GM CEO Stands Up To Glenn Beck, Defends UAW

GM CEO Fritz Henderson was on Glenn Beck’s show yesterday and fielded questions about the government’s involvement in GM after the bailout, stating that they appreciate the support and the government has not meddled in their business. Beck also didn’t expect Henderson to defend the United Auto Workers (UAW).

When Beck claimed that the unions are “strangling” GM, Henderson shot him down:

“They’ve been more part of the solution than the problem… yes, we have significant legacy costs that we’re trying to address. Frankly, they’re trying to help us address those issues at the same time… I view the unions are more part of the solution than the problem. Me personally.”

All Beck could say in response was, “Wow, OK.”

John Stossel on Glenn Beck – Eat Endangered Species

Since following Fox News and Glenn Beck, I’ve seen some bat $#!* crazy ideas, and this one ranks pretty high on the list. John Stossel, on Glenn Beck’s Friday show, proposed the idea that killing and eating endangered species would save them. For those wanting clarification, he suggested we farm endangered species for our consumption and this will, somehow, not make them endangered. Of course, he neglects these simple facts – when you dispose of something, you have less of that thing, consumption is the cause of some species being extinct and not all species are edible, or desirable. I don’t think that really needed to be said, but hey, you never know…

Fox News Personalities = Robots?

In retrospect, it’s easy to spot Coulter and Hannity as early chatbot models. Fox News algorithms for the expression of political opinion started out simple, and since the election of Barack Obama, they’ve become simpler still. (Example: Republican + deficit = good; Democrat + deficit = bad.) While these vary slightly from one bot to another, the imperative to mirror Fox viewers’ inchoate rage against government, Democrats, and liberals keeps that variation limited to a fairly narrow band. What the Fox programmers didn’t yet realize was that the predictability of these bots’ opinions could be leavened by some unpredictability in their temperament. Only with Bill O’Reilly did Fox’s computer scientists demonstrate that more plausibly human characteristics could be programmed in—in O’Reilly’s case, by having O’Reilly explode with rage at random intervals and by programming O’Reilly to say “shut up” whenever a guest’s response to a question failed to compute. If Coulter and Hannity were Fox 1.0, O’Reilly was Fox 2.0

Glenn Beck is Fox 3.0. The sheer variety of his tics—weeping, clowning, etc. (for a video sampler, click here)—make him appear more a performer than a news broadcaster. But the effect is to convince his few critical viewers that he’s a human performer, thereby obscuring the reality that he isn’t human at all.
