Remember Glenn Beck? Remember Goldline?

Goldline International, Glenn Beck’s longtime sponsor, has been ordered by a Santa Monica court to refund $4.5 million to customers, set aside an additional $800,000 for future claims, and stop claiming that the government’s coming for their gold.

Adam Radinsky, the head of the consumer protection unit at the Santa Monica city attorney’s office said of the injunction:

This is a new day. Consumers in California and elsewhere, many of whom invested thousands of dollars and their life savings in the belief that the gold they were buying was a valuable and safe investment, will now get substantial relief. No one should have to suffer from predatory and deceitful sales practices. Whether they are buying gold or anything else, consumers expect a fair deal. We insisted that Goldline give them just that. We hope this case is a wake-up call to other large coin dealers and to other businesses. They need to know that it’s against the law to mislead consumers with false fears and misinformation. And consumers need to be especially careful when investing in this uniquely unregulated industry.

Yuri Beckelman, a former staffer for Weiner who worked on the Goldline investigation, felt vindicated by the injunction. He said in an email:

Goldline can try to spin it any way they want. But when you have to agree to change your business model and then pay a court ordered attorney to monitor your progress for the next five years, you’re admitting that what you were doing was wrong. While the millions in refunds Goldline was ordered to make will be meaningful to the people that were ripped off, the executives got off easy, and they know it.

Rupert Murdoch Ignorant, or Dishonest, About Lost Sponsors?

Is Rupert Murdoch simply unaware of what happens in his own company, or is he lying through his teeth? Or, both? Here’s a brief conversation where he, apparently, shows how completely out-of-touch he is with the loss of revenue Glenn Beck has caused (or how out-of-touch the viewers are who believe his reasoning).

SPOCKO: I know that you don’t break out revenue numbers for Fox News beyond the top line, but with 81 advertisers leaving the Glenn Beck show following the Color of Change action, the show now seems limited to in house ads and gold ads. Do you have a time frame for how long Fox will subsidize the show until it to starts to generate revenue in line with its ratings?

That’s pretty straight forward – without sponsors, the money to support the show has to come from somewhere. Right? Not according to the factually-challenged CEO of News Corp.

MURDOCH: It’s not subsidizing the show at all. And it’s giving a terrific kick off to the whole evening schedule. It has plenty of advertising, and those advertisers you talk about, I don’t think there is anything like that number, but if there were they are on other shows.

Thankfully, some media outlets picked up on this and Keith Olbermann even used Murdoch’s response in his Worst Persons segment. Unfortunately, it doesn’t change anything – Fox News and the News Corp. CEO will continue to simply deny facts and their followers will continue to eat up the BS.

The McBoycott

mcboycott_200x200Why boycott McDonalds, beside the simple fact that their food is largely regarded as being unhealthy? McDonalds restaurants, in some areas including Missouri and Kansas (UPDATE: similar report from Florida), have agreed to place large TVs in their restaurants with the proviso that they broadcast Fox News and only Fox News. One manager explained that it’s corporate policy. A Regional Director for McDonald’s stated that TVs were being placed in all McDonald’s in a five state region. Danya Proud, spokesperson for McDonald’s USA, denied that it is corporate policy, but that it may be a regional or franchise policy.

While the aforementioned sources are from 2008, and FoxNation.com has bashed McDonalds for their “black” web site last year, similar complaints still come in via email. One person reported nice 50″ plasma TVs in at least five McDonald’s franchises, with different owners. The writer was told that they “have to keep it on” and that FNC is the only channel listed in the menu, or in a channel search.

One solution: TV-B-Gone

Glenn Beck Has Lost More Than 200 Sponsors

According to the Washington Post, more than 200 companies have pulled their ads from Glenn Beck’s show(s), including Apple who, apparently, has pulled all ads from FNC!

More than 200 companies have joined a boycott of Beck’s program, making it difficult for Fox to sell ads. The time has instead been sold to smaller firms offering such products as Kaopectate, Carbonite, 1-800-PetMeds and Goldline International. A handful of advertisers, such as Apple, have abandoned Fox altogether. Network executives say they believe they could charge higher rates if the host were more widely acceptable to advertisers.

There is a legitimate fear for Fox News staffers that Beck is becoming the face of the network. One Fox “journalist” stated that Beck “uses distorted or inflammatory rhetoric that undermines their credibility.”

Glenn Becks UK Show Without Sponsors for Almost a Week!

To all the challenged individuals who refuse to read and continually ask how the boycott is going  – here’s a question for you… Do you like apples?

Glenn Beck has lost 116 sponsors and his show in the UK has been without a single sponsor for SIX days!

How d’you like them apples??

The U.K. broadcast of Glenn Beck’s eponymous television program was forced to air free of paid advertisements on four consecutive days last week. This according to StopBeck.com, an extension of the anti-Beck campaign created by ColorOfChange.org. StopBeck.com confirmed that, with the latest group of defections from Beck’s overseas broadcast, Fox News Channel was forced to fill commercial breaks with news headlines and local weather updates from its U.K.-based sister network, Sky News, instead of paid advertisements.

The news comes on the heels of a new group of U.S. companies who have asked Fox News Channel to stop their ads from running or pledged not to run ads on the show going forward. The latest U.S. defections — Allstate Insurance, Anheuser-Busch, Best Western International, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals (maker of Flomax), Brother International Corporation, Hear Music, Idaho Potato Commission, Intersections Inc., Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School, Marriott International, Nestlé USA, Republic of Macedonia, Starkist Co., United Healthcare, USFidelis, Volkswagen and Western Union — coupled with the international movement to bring the total number of companies distancing themselves from Beck to over one hundred.

“We’re incredibly thrilled that StopBeck.com has taken our campaign and successfully executed it internationally,” said James Rucker, Executive Director of ColorOfChange.org. “This is a huge blow against Glenn Beck. As we continue our fight against those that support Beck domestically, we will use this victory as further proof that more and more companies are taking a stand against his racial demagoguery.”

“People now on both sides of the Atlantic are using Twitter and other social media to let companies know that by advertising on Beck’s program, they are subsidizing hate,” said Angelo S. Carusone, lead organizer of StopBeck.com.  “Fox News’ willingness to use filler from Sky News, rather than address Beck’s fear mongering, raises real questions about the network’s priorities.”

Original Story

Our television media purchases are dictated by our marketing plan and are chosen based on time of day, such as early morning (6:00 – 10:00 a.m.) or primetime (8:00 to 11:00 p.m.); channel (ABC, Lifetime, ESPN, etc.) and audience demographics.

We do not dictate what program is on when our commercial airs. But we do frequently evaluate our media purchases to ensure that the programs we choose match our brand’s target demographics and overall advertising plan. In doing so, we have chosen to not air our commercial during Glenn Beck’s program going forward given a number of alternatives that meet our advertising plan’s criteria.

Thanks again for your inquiry.

Glenn Beck Has Lost 96 Sponsors!

A recent update by @stopbeck (StopBeck.com) shows that the current count of sponsors that have pulled their ads from Glenn Beck’s show has reached 96! The latest is ING DIRECT.

“ING Direct UK has confirmed they do not sponsor or endorse the Glenn Beck show. Additionally, no ING Direct advertisements are being screened during or either side of this show and there are no plans to do so in the future.”

Other companies that decided to drop Beck in the past couple months include British Airways, Jack Daniels, KRAFT (UK), Tesco, Reckitt Benckiser (UK), Premier Inn (UK) and more! Some of the former sponsors, such as Waitrose and Metropolitan Talent Management, have pulled their ads from Fox News Channel entirely, while Jack Daniels has decided to stop advertising on any political shows.

Glenn Beck’s Conflict of Interest As Gold Investment Shill

As reported on before, there may be a conflict of interest in Glenn Beck’s promotion of gold investment companies while fear mongering about the economy and the state of the dollar, not to mention promoting his own investments. Now, according to Daily Finance, it appears that Fox News has taken notice and Beck may be in hot water.

Goldline International features Glenn Beck’s picture on their web site and his voice on their radio ads. Due to being a radio personality who does “live reads,” or live commercials, and a commentator, rather than an anchor, some of the normal contract terms have been relaxed. However, Fox News seems to have an issue with the personal nature of Becks relationship with Goldline. The exemption, apparently, is only intended for the live reads and a Fox spokesperson is discussing the matter with Beck’s agent.

Regardless, many journalism watchdogs have noticed the conflict of interest in taking money from a gold vendor while voicing views about the devaluation of the US dollar. Couple this with the fact that Glenn Beck is a gold buyer and is using his listeners to possibly inflate the value of his own investment. Beck calls Goldline a “top notch organization” – one that is mentioned on Ripoff Report here and here.

Politico reports that another company that has sponsored Beck is Merit Financial Services. The president, Peter Epstein had this to say about their relationship with Fox News:

You pay anybody on any network and they say what you pay them to say… They’re bought and sold.and I could care less what people think of him… We advertise on Fox because it makes the phone ring.” He said gold resonates more with Fox’s viewers because it’s the angry white man audience – it’s the conservative audience. … They are distrustful of the government, of the regime.

In a previous response received from another precious metals investment company, Wholesale Direct Metals, Damon Geller made it clear who their business caters to and why they chose to advertise on Beck’s show.

With all due respect… the product I sell is notoriously partisan and biased. Very few demographics buy physical gold as an investment of as an asset of last resort.  Those that have, have made a lot of money the last 8 years and sleep better at night.  If it wasn’t for FOX I wouldn’t have your business to lose anyway because you wouldn’t even know about my company.  I probably have nothing to worry about anyway because you either have no interest in owning real gold or no $$$ to buy any.  I seriously doubt you are a gold owner/investor.  Do you own any gold?  Or is your money in CDs at the bank earning nothing and just going backward slowly while the federal reserve prints more worthless dollar bills any robs you while you’re not looking?  LOL. [...] Get smart and get some Gold.. or go push your BS agenda on someone stupid enough to care about it. If all the companies in America were all more efficient and successful THAT’s what will build a better America.  Not you fear mongering small business that are trying to keep people employed.  And BTW… EVERY client that has ever bought gold from me has a portfolio that has risen in value… can the stock brokers and bankers of America say that??

Of course, since he called President Obama a “racist” and the ColorOfChange.org boycott started, Beck has lost over 80 advertisers. It’s no wonder these are the types of sponsors to stick around and that Beck is one of their biggest promoters.

Glenn Beck Using Fear to Promote Sponsors

Glenn Beck recently lost 19 more advertisers, leaving mostly infomercial-type ads and those for gold-related companies. Beck devoted an entire segment to promoting gold investment in his typical fear mongering style. He said that America might be “facing the end of the almighty dollar” and warned of hyperinflation.

BECK: So, everybody gave us the gold. We still had a nice stack of cash here, and gold.

You’re over here. You don’t have any gold, right? This is you. This is you. This is your savings.

How much did you lose if you had any money in your 401k? Did you lose, let’s say, I don’t know, 40 percent of it? So, that’s gone.

[...]

BECK: Any way to protect yourself?

BUCKNER: Well, you invest in things that are friendly to inflation.

BECK: Gold.

BUCKNER: Gold, real estate and some realm of the world.

YouTube Preview Image

Not once did Beck mention that gold investment companies are sponsors of his show and his comedy tour, like Goldline International, Inc., or that he’s done commercials for Goldline. He’s, essentially, trying to scare his audience into supporting the few sponsors he has left. Gold-related sponsors like Wholesale Direct Metals, Inc. appear to be faithful to Beck, sometimes  belligerently, so he must be working harder to keep them happy and return the favor.

It’s also worth mentioning that there seem to be plenty of complaints about Goldline International, Inc.

Response Received From GEICO

Visitor submitted response from GEICO:

Dear Policy Holder:

Last week we took action to move our marketing messages from the Glenn Beck show and you are wondering why.

Well, you deserve an answer.

If the inflammatory nature of the comments on a program overshadows our message and causes GEICO to be drawn into a national debate, we are likely to reconsider where we place our marketing messages, which is what we did.

GEICO delivers very important messages through its major marketing campaigns: we’re saving customers’ dollars … we’re easy to do business with … we’re looking out for our policyholders. That’s what we hope the public hears and sees and focuses on.

As a company, we do not take positions on controversial issues.

As an advertiser, while a national debate on issues can be healthy and appropriate, we don’t see ourselves in the role of taking part in those debates.

Our business is auto insurance. We want to bring people value and we attempt to reach large audiences with that message.

It is of little benefit to us if a controversy on the program gets so much attention that our message is drowned out.

If you owned a business that sold comedy material would you advertise on the Comedy Channel?  If your business sold kids toys would you advertise on Nickelodeon?  Selling real physical gold and advertising on Fox is called good marketing because there is a larger concentration of people who want to buy gold to hedge dollar debasement watching that channel than any other.  Regardless of my own or my companies political views… it’s just a smart way to reach people who genuinely want access to the product I sell… period.  I own a business and I employ good people.. with kids!  You want to purposely do a bad job of marketing my business because you have a personal issue with an entertainer… really?  So these people’s kids will eat less or maybe I have to fire employees because it’s slow??  Get lost man!  You, not Glenn Beck, seem to have forgotten what America stands for.

Get smart and get some Gold.. or go push your BS agenda on someone stupid enough to care about it.
